We need your backyard!
Ringy.jpgEvery year WIRES carers in the North Shore Branch hand raise Ringtail and Brushtail Possum joeys that have been left orphaned after their mothers have been killed or injured. The branch is seeking to find suitable release sites for these possums once they approach maturity.

You can help us to preserve our native wildlife. We need people who have plenty of trees in their gardens (preferably backing onto bush), and would like to share them with these fascinating animals. Young possums require a safe environment where cats and dogs are kept inside from dusk until dawn and where there are ample native trees for them to eat and in which to make their nests.

The branch releases possums from a portable aviary (1.5m x Aviary.png
1.5m x 1.8m) which greatly enhances their survival chances
by giving them a food and shelter while they are adapting to
their new environment. A WIRES member is responsible
for feeding and monitoring the possums for approximately
ten days during this transition period. We then assess
the possibility of leaving the aviary onsite for further
releases, or remove it.

Can you knit?
If you can knit, we can use your skills to provide pouches for our orphaned Possum joeys to live in until we can release them back into the wild. Download a pattern here. Please only use pure wool.

DONATE NOW
